Period Calculator: Find Your Safe Days and Fertile Window

Quick answer: there is no day of the month that is 100% safe. With regular cycles of 26 to 32 days, pregnancy is least likely on days 1 to 7 and after day 19, and most likely on days 8 to 19. These are "lower-chance" days, not guaranteed safe days.

What Is a Safe Period Calculator?

A safe period calculator uses the first day of your last period and the length of your cycle to estimate which days you are fertile and which days pregnancy is less likely. It then shows these days on a calendar. Some women use it to avoid pregnancy, others use the same dates to time sex when trying to conceive.

It is a planning tool for understanding your cycle. It is not a contraceptive, and it can only predict, never confirm, when you ovulate.

Your Fertile Window: When Pregnancy Is Possible

Your ovary releases one egg per cycle, and that egg can be fertilised for only about 12 to 24 hours. Sperm, however, can survive in the body for up to five days. So you can become pregnant from sex on any of the five days before ovulation, as well as on ovulation day. These six days make up your fertile window.

Ovulation usually occurs about 14 days before your next period, which is why cycle length decides where your fertile window falls:

  • In a 28-day cycle, ovulation is around day 14.
  • In a 35-day cycle, it is closer to day 21.
  • In a 24-day cycle, it is around day 10.

Because ovulation can move by several days from one month to the next, no calendar can name the exact day. If you want a closer look at ovulation timing alone, use our ovulation calculator.

Which Days Are Safe After Your Period?

This is the question most people type into a safe period calculator, and the answer depends on your cycle length.

Your cycle Days with a lower chance of pregnancy Fertile days
Regular, 26 to 32 days Days 1 to 7 and from day 20 until your next period Days 8 to 19
Shorter than 26 days Much less predictable; the safe days right after a period are very few Can begin as early as day 2 to 5
Longer than 32 days Fewer early days are lower-chance; ovulation comes later Shifts later in the cycle
Irregular Very few days can be called lower-chance A wide, unpredictable window

Even the "lower-chance" days carry some risk, so treat them as a rough guide only.

How the Safe Period Is Calculated

Calculators generally rely on one of three methods. The best ones pick the method that suits the cycle you enter.

The Standard Days Method

This is the simplest calendar method and the most researched. It marks days 8 to 19 as fertile for everyone, but it only works if your cycles run 26 to 32 days. If two or more cycles in a year fall outside that range, it isn't a good fit. Research suggests it is about 95% effective when used perfectly and around 88% in everyday use.

The Ogino-Knaus (rhythm) method

This method is based on your own record. Track your cycles for at least six months and find the shortest and the longest. Subtract 18 from the shortest to get the first fertile day, and subtract 11 from the longest to get the last. The more your cycle length varies, the wider the fertile window becomes.

The ovulation-based estimate

For cycles outside the 26 to 32 day range, the calculator estimates ovulation at 14 days before your next period and marks five days before to one day after as the fertile window. It gives a rough picture only.

Safe Period Calculation Examples

Example 1: a regular 30-day cycle. Your period starts on 5 June. Using the Standard Days Method, the fertile days are day 8 to day 19, which is 12 to 23 June. Ovulation is estimated on day 16, 20 June. The lower-chance days are 5 to 11 June and from 24 June until your next period around 5 July.

Example 2: a cycle that varies between 25 and 33 days. The Ogino-Knaus rule gives a first fertile day of 25 − 18 = day 7 and a last fertile day of 33 − 11 = day 22. That is a 16-day fertile window, which shows how irregular cycles leave very few safe days.

Example 3: a short 24-day cycle. Ovulation is estimated on day 10, so the fertile window runs from about day 5 to day 11. The Standard Days Method doesn't apply here, and sex during the later days of a period can already fall close to the start of the window.

Can You Get Pregnant During Your Period?

It is less likely but possible. If your cycle is short, ovulation can come soon after bleeding stops. Since sperm can live for up to five days, sex near the end of a period may still lead to pregnancy. This is why "period days are safe" is a risky rule.

How Accurate Are Safe Days for Avoiding Pregnancy?

Not very. Calendar-based methods depend on predicting ovulation, and prediction is imperfect. Depending on the method and how consistently it is used, roughly 12 to 25 out of 100 women relying on it become pregnant within a year.

Accuracy falls further if:

  • Your cycles are irregular.
  • You recently had a baby, are breastfeeding or just stopped hormonal contraception.
  • You are a teenager or approaching menopause, when cycles change often.
  • You have PCOS or another condition that affects ovulation.
  • Stress, illness or travel has delayed ovulation this month.

Tracking body signs such as morning temperature and cervical mucus improves accuracy, but it needs training and daily effort. If preventing pregnancy matters to you, ask a doctor about more effective options. Many couples also use condoms on fertile and uncertain days.

Who Should Not Rely on a Safe Period Calculator?

A calendar method is a poor choice if you have very irregular periods, have recently stopped birth control, are breastfeeding, or would find an unplanned pregnancy hard to manage. In those cases a more reliable method is a better option.

Why Two Calculators Can Show Different Safe Days

One website may list days 10 to 17 as fertile and another days 8 to 19. Neither is automatically wrong. They follow different rules and add different safety margins. A wider window is the more cautious reading, since sperm survive for days and ovulation can shift. When two results disagree, go with the wider one.

Using the Calculator to Plan a Pregnancy

The same dates work in reverse. Your best chance of conceiving is sex in the two days before ovulation and on ovulation day, and sex every day or every other day across the fertile window works well. If your period is late, a pregnancy test date calculator tells you when to test. After a positive result, use our due date calculator to find your due date.

If you don't know when you conceived, our conception calculator can estimate it from your dates, and the pregnancy calculator will show how many weeks pregnant you are.

Tips for a More Accurate Result

  • Write down the first day of every period for six to twelve months.
  • Mark any unusually short or long cycles.
  • Look for fertile signs, such as clear, stretchy cervical mucus.
  • Try to keep your weight steady, as large changes can affect ovulation. You can check yours with our BMI calculator.
  • See a doctor if your periods are very irregular or have stopped.

Safe Period Calculator FAQs

Is there a completely safe day in the month?

No. Ovulation can shift and sperm can survive for days, so every day carries at least a small chance.

How many days after my period is it safe to have sex?

With regular 26 to 32 day cycles, days 1 to 7 and the days after day 19 have a lower chance of pregnancy, but no guarantee.

Can I get pregnant right after my period ends?

Yes, especially with a short cycle, because ovulation may be only a few days away.

Is the safe period method the same as birth control?

No. It is a way to understand your cycle. If you don't want to be pregnant, use a reliable contraceptive.

What should I do if my cycle is irregular?

Don't rely on a calendar. Use your shortest and longest cycles to see a wider window, and speak to a doctor about better options.

Period Calculator FAQs

How is my next period date calculated?

The calculator adds your average cycle length to the first day of your last period. It repeats the same step to list later periods.

What is a normal cycle length?

Cycles of 21 to 35 days are considered normal for most adults. Periods usually last 2 to 7 days.

Why is my period late?

Common reasons include stress, illness, travel, big changes in weight or exercise, PCOS, hormonal birth control and pregnancy. Take a pregnancy test if you have missed a period and may be pregnant.

How accurate is this period calculator?

It is accurate for regular cycles. If your cycle length changes from month to month, treat the dates as a rough guide and use your own records too.

Why does the table show ovulation and fertile days?

Ovulation usually happens about 14 days before the next period starts. The fertile window is the 5 days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation, which helps if you are trying to conceive or to avoid pregnancy.

When should I see a doctor about my periods?

See a doctor if your cycles are shorter than 21 or longer than 35 days, your period lasts more than 7 days, bleeding is very heavy or painful, or you have gone 3 months without a period and are not pregnant.
